Creation over Consumption
The Art Room believes in creation over consumption - we know purpose is found in what you create, not what you consume, because you were made to make something beautiful.
Our culture is consumed by consumption. Amazon. Instagram. Netflix. TikTok.

If we’re honest, we are each being consumed by our own consumption - we spend more time on our phones than we want and we can’t stop because it’s addicting.

Worst of all, an entire generation is being consumed by consumption - young people are suffering under the lie that entertainment is their highest purpose.
Our vision is to see a generation consumed by consumption experience revival in creation.
Our vision is young people choosing creation over consumption and becoming known as the Creation Generation.
At the Art Room, our mission is to shine the light of Jesus by serving our city with art, coffee, and community. We teach people pottery for free. We serve good coffee. We build relationships that build community. What will you create at the Art Room?
"Mom's always had an art room - growing up, it was the spare bedroom downstairs where I learned to create."
- Mike Hanson, Founder
Our Story

January 2024, my wife and I decided, for the first time, to properly keep the Sabbath: we would spend every Saturday at home making art, spending time together, and resting. We put out an open invitation for friends to join us.

Our friends told their friends, and pretty soon genuine strangers were showing up at our door on Saturday mornings asking, "is this the place I can make pottery?".
From January to August, our doors were open almost every single Saturday and hundreds of people came into that art room (then our living room) and created.

It became clear to us that the city of Boise needed its own art room.

We raised some money, partnered with a coffee roasting company, had a baby, leased and renovated a building downtown, and opened an art center coffee shop.

Today, we run the Art Room, a non-profit with the vision of cultural revival. Every Saturday we still invite our friends to come rest and create with us.
